Geoffrey - zippy & bungle were big figures in my youth.
Along with morph - sooty - worzel gummidge - willo the wisp - mr benn & jamie & his magic torch - they were all attendant friends i saw and was accompanied by in the days of my young life.
My little eyes watched them lots on the massive deep brown tellys we had then and I thought they were my friends. I watched them in between playing out and playing football with my pals or reading the Beano and playing Subbuteo which were our other favourite passtime. I can still remember all the theme tunes now & the fixed times of day i heard them, like it was yesterday.

R.I.P To a wonderful warm human being who lit up many a cold day for me and millions of other British children in the 1970's and early eighties, when I was a child I used to think that all English men were like Geoffrey from Rainbow but I soon grew up and realised he was probably pretending.
Another Legend from my Childhood has passed.
Up above the streets and houses rainbow climbing high,
Everyone can see it smiling over the sky, paint the whole world with a Rainbowwwwwwwwww.

The leaked clip of the Rainbow 'pilot' (actually a joke sketch filmed for an in-house ITV video) where Geoffrey, Zippy, Bungle and George all joke about playing with their "balls" and "twangers" is well known. What's less well known is that rehearsals for the actual show were even more X-rated.
One reader – whose dad had a job where he could smuggle her in to a Rainbow recording – had her innocent memories of the shows shattered as she watched the characters warm up for their first take by reciting lines like "Piss off, George, you fat pink fucker," "Sod off, Geoffrey," and "You can fuck off too, Zippy while you're at it you mouthy wanker, no-one likes you anyway."
It carried on in much the same way until someone yelled "Action!" and they turned in a flawless (and clean) take.
